Postpartum belly binding is a practice that involves wrapping the abdomen with a cloth or binder after giving birth. This technique has been used for centuries in various cultures around the world to help new mothers recover from childbirth.
This particular style is Bengkung Binging originating from the island of Java and is a tradition that dates back thousands of years. It was later adopted by Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore and has now been popularized through the West as a way of postpartum recovery.
The bengkung wrap is a long piece of cloth made from 100% cotton. Traditionally the wrap is worn during the day and for 40-44 days after birth. It supports honey’sbody from the hips to just under her breasts.
The primary goal of postpartum belly binding is to support the abdominal muscles, which can become stretched and weakened during pregnancy and childbirth. The binding can also help to reduce swelling and improve posture, which can aid in the healing process.
There are many different types of postpartum belly binders available, including wrap-style binders, corset-style binders, and simple cloth wraps. Some binders are designed to be worn immediately after giving birth, while others are intended for use in the weeks or months that follow.
****While postpartum belly binding can be helpful for many postpartum honeys, it is important to speak with a healthcare provider before using a binder to ensure that it is safe and appropriate for your individual needs.
Additionally, it is important to follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully with synthetic or Velcro binders and to listen to your body, removing the binder if it causes discomfort or interferes with your ability to care for yourself or your babee.
